KAWS:HOLIDAY Exhibit Makes Waves in Indonesia

Brian Donnelly, aka, “KAWS” has become a well-known force in the art world. KAWS’ most recent exhibition has gained traction globally and online as it is the artist’s largest sculpture ever made. On it’s 10th location this enormous, traveling structure currently resides in a grassy lawn outside of the Prambanan Temple in Indonesia. Previous to this impressive installation, KAWS has had a lengthy and successful career.

Who is KAWS?

This New York-based artist has crafted a unique blend of limited-edition toys, fashionable clothing, and exquisite fine art, effortlessly bridging the gap between artistic expression and global consumerism. Born in 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Donnelly honed his skills at the School of Visual Arts in New York, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration.

Embarking on his artistic journey, Donnelly initially left his mark as a graffiti artist in Jersey City. However, it was during the 1990s that he captured the spotlight by transforming everyday urban surfaces across New York City into thought-provoking masterpieces. From bus shelters to phone booth ads, his distinctive touch garnered widespread attention. He also worked for Disney and had the opportunity to paint backgrounds and contributed in films such as 101 Dalmatians, Daria, and Doug.

It seems as though the late 1990s served as a pivotal moment in time for KAWS as he ventured into the realm of crafting limited edition vinyl toys. His creations quickly captivated the global art toy-collecting community, especially in Japan where they became a total sensation. Collaborations with renowned brands like Original Fake, A Bathing Ape, Nike, and Comme des Garcons only solidified his influence and artistic significance.

Expanding his creative horizons, KAWS delved into acrylic paintings and monumental sculptures, marking a turning point in his career. Among his notable creations is a grayscale sculpture inspired by the iconic Mickey Mouse, which not only garnered significan t attention but also graced the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

As his artistic journey unfolded, KAWS left his mark in museums and galleries worldwide. Solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions like the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, High Museum of Art, and Modern Art Museum underscored his impact. International galleries such as Galerie Perrotin and Honor Fraser Gallery showcased his work, captivating audiences across Paris, London, Berlin, and Tokyo.

Residing and creating in the vibrant setting of Brooklyn, New York, KAWS continues to push the boundaries of conventional artistry while simultaneously embracing global commercialism. His unique fusion of creativity and consumer culture continues to shape the contemporary art landscape.
