And we’re guessing you’ve also noticed that most other “tips for choosing the right size artwork for your wall” are vague like “wall art should take 60-70% of your empty wall space” or “it depends on the size of the furniture you are hanging the art above.” While true, this isn’t helpful if you are an artist or a designer, not a mathematician.
So we’re breaking down the foolproof guide to picking the perfect size wall art. Step-by-step we will walk you through exactly how to calculate what size art to order, and how to determine if your wall art is too big for your space. Let’s get into it!
How To Pick The Right Size Art For Hanging Above Couch or Bed:

Measure the length of your couch or bed.
Example 86 inch long couch -
Calculate the optimal length of your art by multiplying the length of your furniture by 0.75.
Example: 86 in x 0.75 = 64.5 in -
Determine the approximate length of an ideal piece of art based on that calculation.
Example: 64.5 inches is closest to the standard 60 inch frame length. -
Measure the height of your couch or bed (to the top of your headboard).
Example: 32 inch high couch -
Calculate the optimal height of your art by subtracting the height of your furniture from the number 51. Then multiply that number by 2.
Example: (51 in – 32 in) x 2 = 38 in -
Determine the approximate height of an ideal piece of art based on that calculation.
Example: 38 inches is closest to the standard 40 inch frame height. -
