Facts About Color Schemes You Wouldn't Expect

Color plays a crucial role in interior design, shaping the atmosphere and mood of a room. Ashley Manchester, a skilled designer from Studio MAK in Chicago, shares practical insights on how to leverage color to create inviting and captivating living spaces.

It's Not All About Looks...

Color isn't just about looks—it's about how a room feels. "Color can dramatically affect the mood and feel of a room. For instance, we often opt for cool tones in bedrooms to instill a sense of tranquility and peace" Ashley explains. Choosing the right color can truly make a room feel like a sanctuary.

Make It A Mood

Crafting a cohesive color palette is simpler than it sounds. Ashley's advice is straightforward, "Always start with the mood you want to evoke. From there, we play with a mix of complementing and contrasting colors to achieve a rich, layered look." This approach ensures a cohesive yet vibrant decor that enhances the room's desired ambiance. By mixing and matching complementary and contrasting colors, you can strike the perfect balance between harmony and visual interest.

The Trends Vs The Classics

"Lately, we're seeing a resurgence of warm, earthy tones and the boldness of vibrant jewel tones. These colors add depth and character to modern interiors”, Ashley shares. Incorporating trendy colors into your design can give your space a fresh and modern feel. Afraid to pull the trigger on painting your walls? Work these colors into your home with items that are less permanent, like throw pillows and blankets, table decor, hand towels, etc.

Most Risks Pay Off

One of Ashley's most memorable projects involved a bold choice: incorporating bright mustard yellow drapes into a predominantly neutral room. "It was a risk," Ashley admits, "but it paid off beautifully, adding a dynamic focal point that instantly elevated the space." This example just shows the transformative potential of unexpected color choices in injecting personality and flair into a design scheme. Don't be afraid to take risks and experiment with color—it can lead to truly stunning results.

Experiment With Non-Permanent Pieces

Beyond walls and drapes, there are endless opportunities to incorporate color into your space. From vibrant accent pillows to eye-catching artwork, experimenting with different hues and textures allows you to express your personality and style, your home truly unique and inviting. Adding pops of color through accessories and decor items can liven up any space and make it feel more personalized.

Ashley's insights serve as a reminder that color is more than just a decorative element—it's a powerful tool that can evoke emotion, set the tone, and elevate the overall aesthetic of a space. By following her expert advice and embracing color, you can create a home that not only looks beautiful but feels like you.
