Mind-Bending Art: A Conversation with Fran Rodríguez

Art is a form of expression, a sanctuary, and for some, a way of life. I recently had the chance to interview Fran Rodríguez, a fascinating artist whose journey from childhood hobby to career is both inspiring and insightful. His work encompasses digital collage, graphic design, and surreal landscapes deeply influenced by music, nature, and introspection. Here's what he had to say.

Career Change

"As far back as I can remember, art was a hobby that allowed me to escape reality and find my safe place," says the artist. "I spent my childhood cutting out my grandmother's magazines to create collage art, drawing little logos like street tags, and diving deep into the creative realm."

However, Fran’s love for art didn't immediately translate into a career. After turning twenty, he studied graphic design and landed jobs in advertising agencies, spending a decade in a profession that left him unfulfilled. It wasn't until the age of thirty that he decided to turn his passion into a profession. "The transition wasn't easy," he confesses. "But a wonderful cocktail of luck, hard work, talent, and help from friends managed to get me through."

The Creative Process

When asked about what fuels his creativity, music and tranquility top the list. "Ambient, instrumental music with atmospheric or dreamy vocals is my go-to. This kind of music transports me and helps me create mental landscapes where I get inspired," he explains.

But what happens when inspiration runs dry? "Walking is my go-to strategy. Whether it's in the city, on the beach, or amidst nature, walking while listening to music always brings me back to a state of introspection, comfort, and ultimately, creativity."

Crafting Album Artwork

Music isn't just a tool for creativity; it can also be a major project for him. When it comes to designing album artwork for bands like Weezer and Twin Shadow, the artist dives deep into an artist’s catalog to find inspiration. "I immerse myself in the band's music for days, letting their sound, textures, and atmosphere influence my ideas. Then I attempt to capture those ideas visually,” he tells me.

Beyond Art

Outside of art, Fran enjoys hiking and connecting with nature. "Staring at the sky, sitting in the middle of a forest, watching the hours go by is something I cherish," he tells me. He’s also an avid reader and movie buff. "Books like 'The Doors of Perception' by Aldous Huxley, 'The Steppenwolf' by Herman Hesse, and 'The Pursuit of Happiness' by Bertrand Russell have shaped the way I look at the universe."

Travel, Experience, and Influence

When asked about the places and experiences that have influenced his art, he cites the natural beauty of Cantabria in Northern Spain, and how his first experiences with psychedelic substances like psilocybin changed their perception of color and textures forever. "My work is a continuous attempt to capture the tones and vibrations I perceived under the effects," he says.

What's Next?

While he admits to being "quite immobile" when it comes to new techniques, Fran is looking forward to revisiting painting and possibly merging it with his existing digital collage technique. "I just became a father, so my focus is now on my family. But in my scarce free time, I continue to work on new pieces."

Overall, Fran’s journey reflects a culmination of passion, struggle, and personal transformation. He’s given his life more purpose through his surreal and psychedelic artwork, which resonates with people around the world. Fran’s story proves that the journey from hobby to career while challenging, is ultimately very rewarding.
