Miami Art Scene Explores Sports and Culture With New Exhibitions
Art and Athletics Collide in Miami
Miami’s art scene is tapping into the energy of global sports with two new exhibitions exploring the connection between athletics and creativity.
At the Pérez Art Museum Miami, a major exhibition titled Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture is now on view. The show features more than 100 works and artifacts, highlighting how sports have influenced culture across different contexts.
The exhibition includes artists such as Virgil Abloh, Derek Fordjour, Julie Mehretu, Paul Pfeiffer, and Hank Willis Thomas. Together, the works examine everything from professional racing to everyday pickup games and key historical moments tied to sport.
The exhibition runs through the end of the summer.
A Second Show in the Design District
At the same time, the Miami Design District is hosting Sunset Flip, a two-person painting exhibition that takes a more focused approach.
The show features work from artists and professional wrestlers Thekla Kaischauri and Lee Moriarity.
Curated by Adam Abdalla alongside gallerist Nina Johnson, the exhibition explores moments both inside and outside the wrestling ring. The works move through themes of triumph, defeat, sportsmanship, and quieter in-between moments.
Across roughly 10 pieces, the show blends figurative painting with the emotional arcs of competitive sport.
A Broader Cultural Moment
The timing of both exhibitions is intentional.
Miami is currently hosting major sporting events, including tennis, Formula 1, and international football competitions. These shows position the city’s art institutions within that larger global moment.
Together, the exhibitions highlight a long-standing relationship between art and athletics, showing how sport continues to shape visual culture in both subtle and direct ways.
