Washington Commanders Unveil Designs For New Stadium In D.C
The Washington Commanders and global design firm HKS have unveiled the first conceptual renderings of a new, world-class stadium planned for the team’s return to Washington, D.C., as part of a major redevelopment of the former RFK Stadium site. The roofed venue is designed to be a dynamic, year-round destination that integrates sustainable design practices while reimagining the fan experience with immersive public and community spaces.
HKS was named lead architect for the project in late 2025 and brings a portfolio of high-profile sports venues including SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The initial images show a sculpted design with a translucent dome and a continuous colonnade that reflects the character of the city and honors the legacy of the iconic RFK Stadium.
The new stadium is expected to seat between 65,000 and 70,000 fans and is intended to open in time for the 2030 NFL season, following community reviews and regulatory approvals. The structure aligns visually with Washington’s monumental core, with design features that preserve sight lines toward the U.S. Capitol and adjacent landmarks, echoing the city’s historic L’Enfant Plan for urban development.
Beyond football games, the venue is planned as a hub for sports, entertainment, concerts and community events, incorporating outdoor plazas, public parks, mixed-use development and expanded public access to the Anacostia River waterfront. The project reflects a broader shift in how stadiums function in major cities, acting as civic anchors and year-round gathering places rather than single-use sports facilities.
