Michiel Folkers Art prints for home decor

Michiel Folkers or ‘Gieler’ is a contemporary artist living and working in Amsterdam. Exposing his work in galleries and fares from Zurich to New York. He is best known for his layered artworks, large canvases in which he blends colorful street posters together with vibrant colors of spray paint and acrylics.”

A deeper dive reveals that Michiel Folkers got his start as a graffiti artist in the 1990s, before moving to (more legal) street art, and then into painting in more traditional mediums. After working in a postmodern pop-art format, Folkers started to incorporate collage into his work, and it remains to this day. Some repeated themes include “recognizable icons, mostly women, but also famous and non-famous comics.”

Michiel Folkers’ art is layered, complex, and is often a bit chaotic. Folkers says, however, “the chaos has to be friendly and quiet.” In terms of meaning, Folkers explains, “In my opinion, it’s more important the artwork looks nice and appeals to the viewer than it having a deep and intriguing story behind it. But I am always enjoying stories of other artists who are trying to make their artwork sound more important by adding a lot of #blablabla to it.”

Where Should I Hang Michiel Folkers’ Art?

The great thing about Michiel Folkkers’ art is that it’s diverse enough in style, theme, and color palette to go pretty much anywhere. Because we know that isn’t helpful, here are a few specific pieces, and some suggestions for where in your home they might work best.

I Defy Gravity

Centered on an iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe, Michiel Folkers has layered I Defy Gravity with tones of red, purple, and pink in the form of street posters. With this color palette and style, I Defy Gravity is a perfect fit for a cool living room, lounge, man cave, or bedroom.

It's a Sin to be Tired

This famous picture of Kate Moss is breathtaking to say the least. The actress is caught in her typical chin-up supermodel pose, she stuns with both her beauty and her superb ability to be photographed effortlessly. With he style this piece would be perfect for a bedroom with pinks and light colors to complement it.

The Absence of Fear is Love

The classic Popeye & Olive comic goes well in a contemporary room. It has nostalgic looks, a continental accent, or both for creating style in a room like a professional. Whether you are using this piece with whimsical furnishings and upholstery to pull the look together or simply hanging it on the wall in a modern adobe, this product can be a great addition to any home or office.

We're Out

Michiel Folkers creates a new style of graffiti inspired artwork with a ethereal portrait of a God and his angels.  The figures are illuminated by surrounding splashes of spray paint in muted pastel colors. This graffiti application upon a classic painting gives a modern feel to a timeless era. The classic twist would pair nicely in a living room with minimal colors to draw more attention to the artwork.

Calm

Calm is a powerful collage piece ruminating on a tiger as the central image. Michiel Folkers has rendered the tiger itself in black and white but has given it playful (and oddly comforting) green-blue eyes. In  Michiel Folkers’ textbook style, the image is layered with a collage of street posters and other brightly colored sections. Because of the color palette and image invoking strength, Calm would work great in a living room, a study, or even a child’s bedroom.

Forever Searching

There is a certain quality to street art that makes it really stand out from just about any genre. This collage featuring Candice Swanepoel shows her confidence and would make a perfect addition to any home or room to boost your mood. The pink and red hues would be great in any contemporary setting.

Don’t Let Me Stay

Michiel Folkers builds an exciting new portrait of famed late singer David Bowie in Don’t Let Me Stay. Surrounded by mostly colors of orange and green, the black and white photograph of Bowie becomes a standout, much like the singer himself. We could see this piece in your living room, a hip dining room, your home theatre, or really anywhere!
