“My absolute favorite thing about art is that it’s subjective. Meaning there’s no right or wrong. So you can’t actually win at this game. You’re forever chasing greatness. And even when you think you’ve reached it, it can be absolute shit.”

Q&A

How did you get started as an artist?

Seeing my father create blueprints and 3D drawings, and then building what he drew. I originally wanted to be an architect, but ended up going to school for graphic design and while there, I gained the love for painting.

What projects are you currently working on?

I’ve got a couple of commission pieces in the works. I also have a magazine cover I’m doing from an original art piece of mine that’s due soon. I was recently notified that I would be a part of the 100 greatest Houstonians and they’re wanting me to paint an Astros player to have as the cover. Huge honor! So that’s cool!

What type of music do you listen to? Do you listen to anything specific while creating?

The Weeknd. Anything and everything The Weeknd. So basically R&B.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

Honestly, nothing. I truly feel like everything that has happened in my life has lead me to where I am right now. I never imagined my life being how it is. I’m a million percent happy with how things have turned out. If I was given this opportunity sooner, I would’ve dropped the ball. So I’m glad I went through what I did, made mistakes, learned from them and grew into what I am today.

What are you most proud of in your career as an artist?

The fact the Shaquille O’Neal owns two of my original paintings. It’ll never seem real.

Who / what are your biggest creative influences?

Music is a huge influence. Russ is a big inspiration. I think seeing someone do something in a different line of work but still be relatable in the sense that we’re all trying to “make it.” He’s done it all on his own and still continues to climb regardless of what gets thrown his way. But in general, life is always just inspiring as well. I’ve come to really love home decor. That’s what’s been inspiring me lately. Music, fashion, creativity all in all.
